Juneteenth

Dear NNINS Community:

Earlier this week, Governor Northam declared Juneteenth an official state holiday in Virginia. We support this designation and will close our offices at 2:00 tomorrow in recognition of the importance of the day.

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas learned they were free after the Civil War had ended. While the Emancipation Proclamation had been signed two years earlier, it could not be enforced nationally until the war ended. As a result, Juneteenth is also known as African American Independence Day or Emancipation Day.

Juneteenth is a day of celebration, reflection, and renewal in pursuit of a better future. It is celebrated in cities, towns and backyards across the country – including many in our own NNINS community. If you are not yet familiar with Juneteenth, I urge you to take some time to read and reflect on the profound significance of this day in our shared history, both as Virginians and as Americans.

Sincerely,
Peter Cammarata
