Is Your Roof Ready for Severe Weather Season?Mon Apr 03, 2017
You’re not imagining it: Virginia's weather is getting more severe. Tornadoes and hail storms are common as spring rolls in warmer temperatures. The wind storm and tornadoes that swept through Virginia this spring resulted in numerous home damage claims for our members. Last March, a storm swept quarter size hail and powerful wind gusts across central Virginia leaving significant damage to homes. My family’s home was right in the storm’s cross hairs, resulting in a $22,000 insurance claim- including roof replacement- from a weather event that lasted only 6 minutes.
Hail damage to my siding from early spring storm last March in central Virginia.
Here at NNINS, we are seeing how these increasingly common and volatile weather patterns are taking their toll on Virginia homes.
In the past decade, NOAA has identified the Commonwealth as among the top 9 states experiencing billion-dollar weather disaster losses nationally. In fact, all parts of Virginia have experienced extreme weather just in the past year which could expedite roof wear and easily damage the soft metal components on your roof. It’s important to know that you may have accelerated wear or even damage that’s not noticeably visible. For this reason alone, it would be wise to schedule an inspection this spring and be sure everything is still tight and sound.
Here are a few things a certified professional Virginia roofer will check:
- Damaged, worn or missing shingles
- Damaged or missing flashing
- Exposed or loose nails
- Missing caulk
- Rot and/or mold
- Excessive granule loss
- Chimney cracks
Spring is Heavy-Weather Season
In addition to the crazy weather, did you know Virginia’s peak tornado season runs March 1 through the end of May? Not to mention April showers bring May flowers and potential water damage. A simple inspection will ensure your roof is ready to send all that rain straight to your home’s gutter system and safely on its merry way. Then you can enjoy the mild temperatures and pretty blooms with the confidence that your home is prepared for whatever spring weather comes our way.
